This copper gasket artwork was created in collaboration with planetary scientists from NASA. The copper rims in this piece were originally used in experiments simulating the atmospheres of distant planetary bodies. In these scientific studies, gases were pumped into chambers and exposed to plasma or UV light, forming haze particles that may hold clues to the origins of life. Each gasket was used once to form an airtight seal in the chambers and then discarded. I began reclaiming these copper rims, transforming them into worlds using diverse materials. These artworks honor both the science and the experimental process-preserving artifacts of discovery, while reimagining them through an artistic lens. At a time when scientific research faces funding cuts and political pressure, this work underscores the urgency of supporting and celebrating the pursuit of knowledge that helps us understand our planet-and others beyond it.
