Allium Proliferum

"Allium Proliferum," an egyptian walking onion, symbolizes a unique journey through life. At the start of its journey, an Egyptian walking onion sprouts in early spring; their round-hollow leaves shoot upwards. As they continue to grow, a cluster of bulblets form at the top of each leaf. Once the bulblets reach their maturity in late summer, the heavy weight pulls the leaves down to the ground below. The bulblets then take root and the cycle repeats itself, hence its name, Òwalking onion.Ó Each plant has their own unique walk through its lifetime just as us humans have. We face various stages throughout our life. Sometimes we desire for a fresh start; similar to the Egyptian walking onionsÕ fresh start when each bulblet falls to the ground. Due to the significance of the bulblets to the walking onion journey, I focus on the intricate delicate relationship amongst a large pile of Egyptian walking onion bulblets. Each has their own existence while also existing amongst a greater whole, much like we do as humans...reaching for our own individuality amongst our ever growing community of people.
