I was inspired by Ralph Goings work of classic American diners. The reference image used for this painting was taken in a small town of a two-in-one family owned diner/gas station. I was originally told not to paint this because it was above my skill level. In turn, I was very determined to create it. Overall, this piece took three months to complete and was one of the most challenging works I've produced. It is also the one I am most proud of.
The leading lines of the counter top parallel to the chairs is a focal point in the piece because of the depth created. Movement and balance is portrayed by the dispersement of rich red, contrasting the tonal grays.
Some challenges I faced were blending the grey tones of the geometric pattern under the counter and the items' reflections on the counter top. Though there are some imperfections of the painting compared to the reference image, to me, it portrays the quirkiness of a small town, so I am not bothered by it.
