Cacophony is a self portrait that visualizes my need for noise canceling headphones due to a sensory disorder. My whole life, I have struggled with mental disorders that give me an oversensitivity to certain stimuli. Mundane auditory stimuli like breathing, chewing, scratching, and other repetitive noises are distracting and anxiety inducing to me. In order to function in my daily life, I wear my noise canceling headphones everywhere I go. I find a lot of comfort in them. I created this piece through linocut printmaking. I used gestural lines and hatching to create form and a busy, anxious energy. The background consists of repetitive, radiating lines, representing outside auditory stimuli. The only areas of solid black are my headphones and eyes, representing the stability that my headphones give me. The calm expression on my face also contrasts the energy of the piece, communicating that my headphones give me the ability to remain calm in an anxious environment.
