My art represents the fractured relationship between humans and nature. The panda, my muse, is one of many species that has suffered because of habitat destruction. My art began as a graphite sketch, but I realized the monochromatic sketch was not dramatic enough to showcase the serious nature of the subject. I inked the graphite sketch to help the objects stand out from the page and added details and shading with color markers. The colors awaken viewers’ emotions and show the stark contrast between the destruction and the lively restored habitat. The crying panda is being held by human hands and bamboo covered arms to symbolize that humans carry the responsibility for both the destruction and the restoration. The eyes also reflect the dichotomy. The panda’s fur is black and white with shades of gray embodying the complicated relationship between humans and nature; the two extremes of right and wrong, and finding a balance in between to ensure humans and nature can exist together.
