This artwork holds great significance for me. The idea was created in a time of self-doubt and deep depression in the peak of quarantine, and I wanted to create a visual of how I was feeling at the time. I chose to paint a koi pond because water is reflective. When we look into it, we can see ourselves extremely clearly. However, we cannot always see what is in the water; this is were the self doubt ties in. I could see myself, but my perception was shallow. The eyes in the lily pads were meant to portray how exposed and belittled I felt because of social media. I had the illusion that all eyes were on me because I was spending a great deal of time on these platforms. However, the koi fish stand out against the deep, saturated water and the staring lily pads. Koi fish universally represent perseverance and strength. I included them in this work to show how I overcame my difficult feelings and how I found peace with myself through art.
