As artists, we often stare at a blank page or canvas, desperately wracking our brains for ideas. I struggled to come up with a concept for this painting that felt competent. So as I sat there and struggled, it dawned on me that depicting that very struggle was the concept I was looking for. This self-portrait was constructed using a photo reference and the grid method. I decided to forgo painting the vague details of the trees and houses outside the window to emphasize the idea that artists will become so absorbed in their thinking that they begin to ignore the world around them.
