My piece depicts a Cooper's Hawk. This hawk has unique primary feathers at the edge of its wing, which is inspired by a rehabilitation treatment for rescued birds of prey. If a bird loses its flight feathers due to an injury, the vets are able to graft in new flight feathers from other similar bird species. This unique ‘new wing’ allows the bird to be released in the wild, and as the bird molts, new feathers will grow in the grafted feather’s place, allowing him to make a complete recovery. I also found this reminiscent of the human need to ask for help, and how oftentimes, even when our future may seem hopeless, pieces of loved ones surrounding us help us regain flight.
