My piece “Under the Sea” is a batik. A batik consist of using your choice of dye on fabric after painting with hot wax. You use wax as a resist to create abstract designs as well as sealing in your colors. For me, I created an illustration of a jellyfish on silk fabric. I strategically chose to use silk fabric to accurately capture the true essence and beauty of the ocean. I used dynamic shaping to capture movement as well by adding three dimensional elements. I used embroidery thread to sew in the details of the tentacles and stuffed the jellyfish with poly-fil to make the jellyfish look 3D. I added curled wire and cut lace to capture the texture and lines of jellyfish tentacles. I love this design and all of the different elements I used and the way the colors encapsulate the beauty of marine life.
