One of my favorite mediums has always been charcoal because of its ability to represent value in artwork. Before this piece I hadn't picked up charcoal in a very long time, and I enjoyed using it again after so long. My piece shows a girl who has just drawn a character on paper and is surprised when it jumps out of the paper. I wanted to make sure that the viewer understands the emotions and surprise of the girl through her body language, without showing her face. One of the things I love about being an artist is being able to give shapes and colors on a paper a soul. This piece portrays the ability of artists to be able to bring characters to life and the joy that comes out of that ability.
