My artwork depicts a knightly figure on his feet by his loyal companion. The warrior is Death, loosely based on the four horsemen of apocalypse. Knowing he wears a heavy armour, he gives his pale horse a break and comforts it. Besides the very popular image of Death, this artwork also illustrates a famous saying:"let Death be kinder than man". He is walking by his war horse while a live human would've left him behind. The limited pallet of split complementary colors helps to separate each object and make the composition easily readable. I also used shapes rather than blending because I love the way gouache lays in layers and allows for clean edges. I like how this piece turned out, especially the armor and the horse. I don't paint animals often, so I was a little worried about it in the beginning. With the armour, I used a dark color on top of a very light one so I was afraid the yellow would lift up and make a brown mess but it didn't, so the "experiment" could be ruled a success.
