"Futility" serves as a commentary on persistent effort without any progress, which results in eventual quitting. It's inspired by an experience I had camping with my family in Gorges State Park, during which we attempted to start a fire using a Duraflame log, which is supposed to be effortless. It was extremely windy that night, and we attempted to light a simple fire starter where the flame wouldn't catch at all. Attempting for about half an hour, we went through a box of matches with no success. Eventually the "wicks" on the log had burnt out and it was impossible to ignite, so we abandoned the idea of a fire that night. The irony in this experience lies in the failure of a tool meant to simplify the process, but ultimately becoming more difficult than creating a regular fire. This moment became a metaphor for situations in which my repeated efforts result in no progress, and the inevitability of giving up.
