For this piece, I wanted to challenge how humanizing a subject changes how the viewer looks at a piece. This work shows a fairy in the process of being dissected, this practice can be seen through classroom frog dissections and biology textbooks, but how does the experience of viewing it change when the subject looks more human? The subject matter of a fairy pays homage to pinned butterflies which inspired pose of this piece. The choice to give the fairy a feminine figure was intentional. While working on this piece, I thought of the women who were experimented on in the name of science, such as Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy (the mothers of Gynecology). I wanted the fairy to stare directly at the viewer, as an uncomfortable reminder of her circumstance. The fairy's wings are a vibrant green to make the red in both her exposed cavity and string holding her up to pop out. Can the abuse of countless women throughout history be excused for the life saving discoveries they brought?
