Jessica Lewis paints the enchanted business of childhood. Becoming a mother had the greatest influence on her work. Experiences with her children as they’ve grown remind her of her own childhood and in that way the paintings become not only portraits of the children she paints but also self-portraits. Layered between these two worlds, some of these experiences, in a present context take on new meaning. They invoke conversations about the differences between generations, their experiences versus ours.
Her work marries a flat patterned background and figure that together create a story. The designs recreate the imaginary world of the child in illustrative form. The combination of figure and background create a time capsule, preserving bits of memory in danger of being lost.
She paints to preserve what she knows is fleeting and what she'll want to remember: the enchanted business of childhood.
