This painting is a continuation of my series relating to issues of gender, race and identity, taking the form of life sized portraits. The issues for each piece are derived from the character and personality of the individuals I paint, and the universal themes I see reflected in them. I'm motivated by my need to empathize with those whose experience I can never know.



"Glass Ceilings, Glass Walls" refers to the barriers in the social and corporate worlds to women in general, and women of color specifically. These disparities, and their genesis in the implicit sexism of our society, has been shown in high relief by the #metoo movement. This figure is scarred, but strong and resolute. Her hand presses against the invisible wall separating her from her potential. She emerges from a ground of handprints representing her victimization and objectification, of which this painting might be considered a part.
