"Lift Every Voice and Sing (Ode to the Racial and Economic Struggle in the Black Church)" seeks to explore the position and work of the African American church in the African American community in the past and present. This work explores the dichotomy of the public's admiration of Black forgiveness (such as the Charleston Church shooting and Brandt Jean) while neglecting Black calls for justice.



The artist uses an archaic noose that normally symbolizes death, fear, and intimidation but flips it wrong-side up to take away the perceived meaning and power while leaving the question of what it could thus mean.



The artist uses minimalist features such as lights and untreated materials to confront the viewer with raw racial undertones yet invoke an almost spiritual quality. The artist's use of lines leads the viewer's eye on an almost never-ending up and down path of contemplation and meditation.
