The 2019 Emerging Artist award-winner from City of Atlanta Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs, Miriam is a painter, a certified welder, and a fiber artist. Since 2014, she has assisted artists to produce their award-winning large-scale sculptures, installations, and murals across the globe.
Miriam learned to crochet from her grandmother but rediscovered it in 2016 when she worked with Jin Choi (Choi + Shine Architects) on their first public art installation. Miriam returned to this craft from her childhood and began studying the Japanese art of “Amigurumi.” She was interested in flipping the construct of these “miniatures” meant for intimate, personal use. Considering the construct that women should be small to be acceptable, Miriam wondered, “what would it be like to be BIG?“
Miriam began creating armatures and exploring various ways to support, surround and enclose metal forms. Studying metal work, contrary to her work in crochet, she found herself the only woman among men.
