Flock is an installation of origami-shaped birds that ran in the trees, 100’ along the Holmes Run Trail in Alexandria, Virginia. The goal of this particular public art was to bring joy and delight to the walkers, runners, and bicyclists through the use of whimsical shapes, bright colors, light, and movement. Outdoor activities were our saving grace during a year of not being able to gather safely. We missed our community. The birds are etched with messages, memorials, mantras, inside jokes, and well-wishes from members of the community to feel a sense of togetherness during a very difficult time for us all. Entering the installation, the dichroic film on the birds is transparent and also highly reflective, casting brightly colored shadows on the ground and throwing light and color onto the surrounding area, catching the public’s attention and causing them to notice the details of their environment and creating a glittering, magical experience.
