The name of this drawing is "The Anatomy Lesson." It is part of a large series of drawings about my years teaching and traveling in Southeast Asia. I was inspired to create this series, because of my love for 19th century Japanese print series by artists like Hokusai and Hiroshige. Though small in size, these prints provide a concentrated snapshots of life. I was a teacher for a long time in southern Thailand. I was primarily an English teacher, but I also taught art, science, math, and other subjects. This was a poor rural school, and I was always looking for visual aids. In storage, I found this 1950's female anatomy model. It was a big hit with the students. The boys joked around a lot. Also, I came back from lunch one day to find some girls huddled around looking intently at the small model of the fetus...a powerful moment. In this drawing, I was interested in showing the difference between how boys and girls approach learning and life.
