Tributary is 152 squares of drawings, maps, photos, Google Earth scans, and materials found on-site in Lake City. The grid forms a collage of contrasting patterns so that from a distance, an abstract design is on view, but up close, people may see details of scenes, objects, and text. Photographs convey different aspects of the city and natural surroundings combined with graphic line drawings of map elements — vein-like tributaries — and yellow jessamine flower petals. I take inspiration from specific locales and use history, memory, and material to make connections with the natural world and each other. I build spaces that uncover awareness of time, sensations, and the details of the physical world, often brought about through symbolic representations, invented landscapes, and dreamlike consciousness. I meddle into the problems of memory — how personal and collective histories overlap and reveal dimensions of physical memory and remnants of shared moments.
