In her work, North Carolina mixed media artist Michelle Davis Petelinz is irresistibly drawn to incorporate symbols, patterns, textures and colors of West African and Native American cultures which are her heritage. Michelle is passionate about bringing art to the world; her own creations, and by teaching art to children and to adults with disabilities. Her work often features original, hand cut stamps; painted papers; her signature textured and distressed low-fire clay elements; gelatin prints; metallic threads; and paper beads. Wood, stones, feathers, shells, and bone beads imbue her work with strong tribal connections. She visually explores the cultural significance of decoration, artifacts, and symbology, or how color plays across various surfaces and textures with a goal of interpreting these visual elements to resonate with the viewer as objects at once unusual and familiar; evoking ancestral and contemporary design, speaking across cultures to the deep well of the universal.
