While digitizing old family photos I came across a photograph of my father Charles, “Chuck,” from his elementary school picture day. My father passed away when I was a teenager, and while I remember my dad’s personality and mannerisms, looking at this photo made me realize how many details and specific questions I still have about his life. The pixelated style of this piece shows a complete portrait from afar, but when looking closer, an ear, a nose, and an eye just become blue dots. A low-resolution image of Chuck: a full picture but missing the details. Recreating his school photo as a pixelated painting reminds me both of the total image I have of my dad from my stories and memories, but also of all of the things I do not, and will not, get to know about him.
