Artist Statement

"Dwelling" is a rough replica of their late Grandmother's home and touches on the cognitive dissonance of feeling nostalgic for a troubling past when things are better in the present. This piece is a part of Hyman's recent work exploring memory. Specifically, the importance that physical and visual cues like heirlooms and architecture hold on recollecting, connecting, and finding meaning in the past within a southern queer context.

Amy Hyman

Richmond, VA

Amy Hill Hyman is a mixed media artist from Charleston, SC where they received a BFA in Studio Art and Art History from the College of Charleston c/o 2019. They work in reclaimed soft plastics, ceramics and oil paints. Their recent work is centered on visual memory, exploring the importance that physical and visual cues like heirlooms, lost photographs, and architecture hold on recollecting and finding meaning in one's past in a southern queer context. They are currently based in Richmond, VA with a home studio shared with their cat Stevie.
