Exploring the individual personalities of her farm animals, Nancy Bass stages subtle and unexpected dialogues between the animals and the viewer.



In her recent paintings, Bass utilizes a deep panel format to heighten direct encounters with the animals. Each piece juts out from the wall, encouraging the viewer’s immediate physical engagement with the scenes and subjects. The farm animals likewise engage dynamically with one other, turning their heads and peering across and within panels. The blank space between them – and the spatial and temporal discontinuity in their surrounding landscapes – suggests the growing disappearance and fragmentation of the natural world they inhabit.



Inspired by thirty- five years raising cows on the historic Anchorage Farm in Southern Albemarle, Bass’s named and loved bovines are the subjects and inspiration of her many paintings.
