Waiting often comes with a choice: sitting down signals we expect to be there for a while, whereas standing or moving suggests we expect to be there temporarily. In this painting, my mother stands next to a chair, her gaze steady, deliberately refusing the comfort of sitting. This simple gesture speaks to her awareness of life's fleeting nature. The vacant areas on her figure reveal the places her body has been surgically repaired-marks of her endurance and resilience. These interventions have enabled her to remain active far beyond what might have been possible otherwise. Through this piece, I invite viewers to reflect on the certainty of physical decline and the acceptance of mortality. While creating this work, I invited my mother to help select the colors, flora, and patterns, emphasizing the importance of reflection and choice. It serves as a reminder that contemplating life after death is a deeply personal journey-one that each person must consciously undertake for themselves.
