Credited as a pioneer in modern nursing, Florence Nightingale was known for checking on wounded soldiers in the Crimean War with an oil lamp to guide her way in the night. Nightingale excelled in mathematics as a child in school, and it was her application of statistics to the field of nursing that brought such significant impact and lasting change. These symbols of the lamp, the adding machine, and the dove decoy as a stand in for the casualties of war, allow me to tell her story in a way that fits with my practice of creating still lifes with found objects that range from antiques to nostalgic junk. The image is created "in camera" (or in other words without compositing) with props, painted paper, and projected original photographs of my own.
