In recent years, the separation of families at the Southern border has been a humanitarian crisis that has captured the attention of the world. I sought to capture the emotional pain and trauma of families torn apart by government policies. I placed a mother and her child as the focal point to demonstrate the emotional toll of this issue that happens everyday. This helps to depict the pain and confusion of children and parents as they are torn apart from one another, the desperation of those who are seeking asylum, and the harsh realities of life in detention centers. The bottom of the canvas consists of real headlines on major news sources in the U.S. and most of which are psychological harm to children and parents caused by the separation. This issue is also having a broader impact on communities and societies as a whole. By making a statement, I hope I can help to raise awareness and to spur action, making a difference in the lives of those who are affected by this.
