In this piece, I have the woman sitting in the corner of the bathroom, hunched over in distress. To the left of her, the trash can is knocked over revealing a positive pregnancy test. While to the right, sits another positive test with her phone open to articles concerning abortion laws. The articles highlight how abortion laws have changed due to the overturning of Roe V. Wade; some states with complete bans with no exceptions for rape and incest. I did this to show the distress and grief the woman is experiencing finding out she is pregnant with her assaulter's child. The woman’s thigh bears a Medusa tattoo, a symbol among sexual assault survivors as a sense of protection and strength. This symbol has been used to help fight the narrative that they are not less than others and should not be blamed for what occurred. I wanted to incorporate the meaning a Medusa tattoo holds and the harsh reality that women are facing in America as more of our rights are stripped from us.
