Creating a series of digitally edited photographs on mental health disorders, I highlight a key issue in society today. My piece reflects the visual perspective of an individual with depression. Representing her internal shattered struggles, I set the subject in low lighting to create a visual depiction of suffering. The butterfly, a universal symbol of mental illness, is purposefully colorless to account for the girl's fading soul. The only hues are seen in her hair and skin, representing how one can not determine the inner feelings of another from an outside perspective. While she seems colorful on the outside, her inner soul remains colorless. She has no sense of security, lost in her own identity. She looks at her shattered reflection, not knowing how the pieces will become whole again. Some see a hopeful light in the bottom right hand corner. I wish for viewers to understand the true hardships of depression, and how one may find hope in the light of a shattered self-reflection.
