Breaking through their shells, baby sea turtles rise just before the sun. They crawl out into the dark morning as they experience the beginning of their lives. The light of the sun bleeds into the night sky as it nears the horizon. The soft wash of the waves dampens the sand on the path in front of them. This piece was made using ink pen and alcohol markers. I initially came up with the idea to draw the emergence of baby sea turtles while I was contemplating what animals I was most interested in drawing. I depicted the fragile moment of hatching in a secluded, peaceful environment. Many sea turtle hatchings are viewed by humans, but the raw beauty of the natural journey was what captured my attention. I used soft, blended lighting to enhance the vulnerability of the scene.
