This piece is set in the Greek afterlife, Asphodel Meadow, which is reserved for ordinary souls. The subject, a skeleton, is a soul who is decomposing in the monotony of life after death, hence the pearly bones. The meadow's grass contrasts the skeleton by representing the dichotomy of life and death. For this piece I experimented with light and negative space. The light brings attention to the skull as the brightest part of the piece. In the negative space I painted blades of grass, showing the interconnection between life and death, especially with the grass peaking through the ribs where a heart would be. I was inspired to create this piece when reading about the Greek Underworld, with its various sections for the dead based on actions they took in life. I wanted to tell the story of a soul who was ordinary in both life and death but still found peace in the afterlife.
