When I first started to envision my piece I wanted to show a realistic object which shows value, depth, space, texture, and contrast, while holding meaning behind the piece. I was attracted to the gavel for the many stories it could tell and how it can represent many different things to many different people. I selected colored pencils to depict a more realistic gavel. The gavel is held by two pieces of tape. The imperfect tape on the gavel represents the imperfect system that holds the weight of judgements made. I used contrast with color and shading, separating the light cream colored tape to the dark brown gavel with shadows to help create a more realistic object.
