Wadmalaw Island, SC
Born in 1962, Mark Beale grew up exploring the creeks and rivers of Tidewater, Virginia and developed an early love for the coastal landscape. As a teenager, he began studying studio art in local workshops with Barclay Sheaks and later with Theodore Turner at the University of Virginia. In 1989, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he currently lives with his wife Terri. His painting style draws from 19th Century Tonalist and Impressionist schools and emphasizes our emotional connection to the natural world. Beale’s work has been selected for numerous juried exhibitions and has earned many awards including two “Paint the Parks Top 100” Awards from the National Parks Service. In 2012, two of his works were chosen for the National Parks Service’s two-year traveling exhibit and in 2013, he won first prize at Magnolia Garden’s national landscape competition. In 2014, Beale was invited to exhibit at the Salmagundi Club in New York City where many of his primary influences exhibited their work.
