I create abstract and figurative portrayals that connect the past with today's world. My paintings explore the porous nature of identity through images that challenge the viewer to contend with social norms and social constructs. As part of my creative process, I sift through the detritus of American Culture, finding inspiration from children's books, news footage, comic books, and advertisements that speak to privilege and social divide. This imagery is used as nuanced commentary, placing in dialogue personal imagery with pervasive ideologies, political/socio reality, and alternate realities. I started this painting shortly after receiving my MFA in '99. Finally, after 22 years in storage, I completed it in July '21. Although the representations in this painting are different in style, periods, and initial intent, they conjoin through proximity and their place of white privilege.
