The “Beauty Strip” series of works depicts the various states of a single space in rural South Carolina: from dense forest, to clear cut lumber piles, to a fenced off strip of property. The work alludes to the practices of speculative logging and land “development”, where whole portions of the local ecosystem are selectively carved away. The imagery utilized in this particular piece was cataloged throughout a period of six months: after noticing a large portion of heavily forested land was set to be sold for development, I documented parts of the forest. Once the property was sold and logging commenced, I visited the space again to document the clear cutting of the property, only to be halted eventually by a construction fence. Each layer is meticulously rendered and hand-printed to quietly acknowledge these liminal spaces. The work is about the simultaneous and fleeting nature of a shifting landscape, and the callous tendency to denote human boundaries where there were none.
