Joe Roache was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. Joe completed his undergraduate study in art at Florida A&M University and graduate study at The University of Wisconsin, Madison graduating with an MFA in Painting.







The juxtaposition of images creates a tension, the meanings in visual communications come from the images and how they are placed. One image has a meaning, two or more images together has other meanings. I put my images together for my personal reasons some having to do only with color and texture some having to do with meaning and narration. I love for people to grapple with my paintings to try to find the meaning or to make the meaning what they think.







I create paintings like I write an essay. I don't know if that is good or bad. I do believe that painting that is meaningful can be or should be thoughtful as well as visually appealing. Paintings are a means of making thoughts visible.
