Emily Furr doesn’t paint nudes. Her style is almost familiar, featuring neoclassical arrangements and brushwork in hues of millennial pink and neons. Her figures explore 17th century poses, breaking the confines of the canvas, and scattering across the wall as sculptural reliefs. The “nakedness” she features is a flirtation, best illuminated by a story from her youth. The scene is a sailing camp in the summer, a teenage Emily has an unrequited crush on her sailing instructor. While out on the water running drills she is instructed to flip her Sunfish to practice the skill of righting it. Faced with a difficult task and a desire to impress, the anxiety and pubescent frustration overwhelms her. Rather than face humiliation in the eyes of her crush, she instead leaps in to the water crying, and swims to shore with tears streaking her cheeks.
