The Friendfield Village church at Hobcaw Barony holds a special place card in the history of African Americans on the Waccamaw Neck of Coastal South Carolina. Friendfield Village was a slave village during the time when indigo and rice production flourished in the region. In the early 1900's descendants of slaves still resided at the village and worshipped at this historic chapel built in 1890 to replace an earlier structure. My painting was created to offer the viewer a chance for their own interpretation; comfort at the sunrise or solace at the sunset. Either way, the village residents took refuge within those chapel walls for much of their and their descendants' lifetimes.
