Derrick Phillips, Sr. is a mixed media artist and printmaker†who lives and works in Lawrenceville, GA right outside his hometown Atlanta. In 2000 Phillips received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a Concentration in Printmaking from Atlanta College of Art. His art pays homage to the African American experience which he calls the tragedies and triumphs of what it is to be Black in America. His primary goal when creating is to inspire, enlighten, encourage, and educate through his work.
Derrick recently won the Best in Show Award at Arts Clayton Gallery Juried Fine Arts Show and Competition and was awarded a solo exhibition. His winning piece of art ìFrom Whence Come Our Helpî is now part of the gallery's permanent collection. His work is also the private collection of over 150 collectors. Also, currently on display at Avondale Marta Station is Phillips's first public art commission piece titled ìThe Journey We Traveledî an 8 ft-by-8 ft mixed media wood assemblage.
