This portrait of Nina Simone, is named after her song "Four Women." It shares the experience of four women of different ethnicities who each have experienced abuse, pain, trauma and systemic oppression. Simone's artistry became a vehicle for her activism, however, manifestations of her personal struggles obscured her work in later years. The current political climate of erasure has decimated the rights and autonomy of all marginalized communities (women, black/brown peoples, differently abled people, and LGBTQIA+ people). This portrait serves as a juxtaposition and an impetus for empathy and acceptance. The fractured images of Simone, combined to create a single portrait, considers the various ways we all exist, navigate the world, and the visible and more often invisible, struggles we are burdened to carry. As a society we can no longer afford to allow these differences to cause division, instead we can create a tapestry of experience that is necessary for true empathy and healing,
