There is a narrative, primarily pushed by transphobic people in the media and online, that medical transition, i.e. the process of changing one's own body through the use of hormones and surgery, is tantamount to bodily mutilation. And that is simply not the case. Transitioning is the process of making ones physical body align with their psychological and spiritual self-it is the process of making one's exterior true to their interior. Transitioning saves lives. This piece is meant to illustrate that transition is the ultimate act of bodily autonomy, as we are presently living through some of the greatest attacks on the autonomy of not just trans people, but of women too. By positioning myself in a pose that echoes Da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi," and Durer's Christlike self-portraits, bathed in the blood of transphobia and misogyny, I seek to show that transness is both resolute and divine. Knife in hand, ready to protect and enact my transition and my salvation.
