I chose this image because it resonated with my feelings of incompleteness and brokenness. When I first captured this image, I wasn't sure what drew me in, but through the experimentation process with different printmaking techniques, its meaning unfolded. I used the SolarFast printing process because it marries the beauty of cyanotype printing with the freedom to choose any color. The process consists of taking a digital negative of the photograph, printing it on transparent paper, painting the dye on another paper, then exposing it to sunlight or UV light. In using the color blue, I had its somber and melancholic tone in mind, but it isn't the pure cyan of a traditional cyanotype-it is softer, more personal, reflecting a quieter sadness. This work became a mirror of my own emotions, a reflection of fragility and the long process of understanding oneself by making.
