I was given dad's briefcase after his passing. The fabric lining reminded me of the walls of the cubicle panels at our state offices. I envisioned an entire parody of my old workplace, using animals to represent various bosses, and the employees would be timid sheep. I defined eight personalities of our administrative staff to display in the suitcase lid and numbered the characters. Very cathartic. I also defined an IDEAL boss and depicted him/her as "Lassie," the gentle sheep herding dog. When exhibited, the exercise of writing an anonymous comment about one's boss has proven very therapeutic for other working-class folks like me. I was delighted to have historically preserved an actual place with actual (but unrecognizable) people that only my handful of coworkers could vouch for its reality. The universal relationship of employees and bosses results in a LOT of people identifying with these characters, no matter where they have worked. Their freely spoken comments are intriguing.
