After going on a walk downtown and looking at the birds around campus I was inspired to make a piece about how society views pigeons versus doves. Pigeons are seen as dirty city birds while doves are beautiful and represent peace even though they are very similar birds. I showed this conflict in my piece by creating a story of the pigeon hybrid being cast out of his village while the dove consoles him. The pose the figures are in was inspired by Herbert Draper's The Lament of Icarus, where the Pigeon hybrid is in Icarus's position and the Dove is in the nymph's. To better tie in the Greek influence I had the Pigeon leaning on a broken column. The bleeding hearts were added to represent the Dove's feelings for the Pigeon and their situation. The bleeding hearts could also be interpreted literally because the Pigeon has been impaled through the heart by the townspeople.
