My sea turtle sculpture is crocheted using only recycled plastic bags and fishing line. I named her Scrappy to represent the scrap plastic bags she is made with. Over 100 plastic bags and an estimated 5000+ stitches went into this piece. It is entirely free handed and was made up as I worked on it. It took several months to make and many, many hours. Single crochet stitches make up the bulk of this sculpture, but it also includes half-double, double, and treble crochet stitches. It took many steps to prepare the plastic bags into a workable "yarn." It was a tedious process, but important for my idea to come to life. While it is only a small portion of the plastics that end up in our oceans, it showcases a step in the right direction for their conservation. I hope my art sheds light on the topic and captures the radiance and beauty of our ocean's sea life.
