Whether it is slanted or segmented benches, spiked ledges, or other barriers, it can be seen all over major cities. For many people experiencing homelessness, the only hope of having a comfortable rest is to sleep on benches or on the sidewalk, but now these places are designed to deny them any comfort. I found the reference photo for this piece on a website titled: "8 Pro Tips for Removing a Homeless Person from Your Property." In the photo, the woman is sleeping so peacefully that it made a jarring contrast to the negative content of the article. I wanted to use her image in a more positive way, so I focused on her serene and relaxed expression, like she is having a peaceful rest even though she is denied the simple comfort of sleeping on the bench behind her instead of the cold sidewalk.
