For my piece, "Of the colossal Wreck," I embroidered realistic ducks inspired by the duck blanket stuffies I had growing up, alongside an image of a beer that I remember people drinking around me when I was young. I chose embroidery as my medium to represent the softness of impressionable youth, and I experimented with different strand counts and stitches to create texture in some areas and smooth, blended transitions in others. This work represents my distant and foggy relationship with alcohol as a child. Although it was very prevalent in my environment, it felt removed, dreamlike and untouchable, something I knew I would never be old enough to indulge in.
