My project is portraits of women in their third act. All of these women are at least sixty years old with life stories etched on their faces. Being a third act woman myself, it was a simple matter to reach out to friends and ask them to send me a selfie. I asked them by email to put artifice away and give me an honest image of themselves with no makeup, no styled hair, and no distracting clothing. My final selections included Judie, a weaver friend, Joan, a friend since 1975 and Nancy, my sister-in-law. Using the biggest brush possible, I began my paintings. It was as if each woman was telling her story as she developed on my canvas. By Act III, the stories of these women were etched in the faces. Their stories show the courageous, defiant, generous, wise and sometimes chaotic lives that they lived. They invented solutions and changed plans as they went along. It was an honor to be trusted with the nakedness and vulnerability of these women.
