I pass by 107 Coming St. each day on my walks to the College of Charleston's campus. The house, draped in fragrant sweet pea vines and calling out with its alluring mystery, in many ways represents the atmosphere of Charleston. Its walls are drenched in history and its chimneys recall the gothic aesthetics of the mid 1800s. The wood siding has been beaten and tarnished by time, yet its structure is solid and enduring. Even the home's viney cloak, which is annually trimmed to the ground and allowed to regrow, echoes the house's resilience through the cyclical seasons of time. 107 Coming Street is by no means an architectural masterpiece, yet its understated subtlety and ever-present fortitude captures minds in awe and appreciation. Charleston is filled with these buildings--buildings that tell a story when you look at them; buildings that endure beyond their owners; buildings that create a sense of place--and they all deserve to be memorialized piercing the rolling night sky.
