Humans, much like water, are made of molecules that collide and shift over time. The Law of Conservation of Mass states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed, but merely changes over time. In conducting a material exploration, I became fascinated by the concept of changing phases. I considered how a moment in time or a specific phase of life could be preserved beyond its prior composition. In this piece, water transitions through three forms of life: solid ice, liquid water, and evaporated gas. I first wanted to semi-permanently preserve the process of melting ice by using wax to capture the intricate nuances between solid and liquid forms. Focus shifts to the liquid water as it collects in clear bins to later evaporate into gas. The three phases allude to the relationship between humanity’s evolutionary change and concept time. The title “Entropy of Fleeting Moments” illustrates the seemingly random chaos of change.
